“Four basic specifications” that are important when choosing a switching power supply

For those who want to know the basic specifications of switching power supplies

“I want to know what specifications are required when choosing a switching power supply.
I don’t know the electrical, but I want to know at least the specifications that I should know.

Also, please let me know if there is a convenient search function. ”

We will answer these concerns.

The basic specifications of switching power supplies are not difficult.
As many of you may already know,
I also wrote notes, so please have a look.

Basic specifications of switching power supply [There are 4]

The following four points are the basic specifications.

・Input voltage (V)
・Number of outputs
・Rated output voltage (V)
・Maximum output current (A)

The above four items have been set, but there are other basic specifications.
This time, the basic specifications are the minimum items that can be selected by the model.

Input voltage (V)

Indicates the range of input voltage that can satisfy all specifications.

It is often written as follows.

AC ◯◯ V ~ ◯◯ V for AC input, 3φ AC ◯◯ V ~ ◯◯ V for three-phase input
For DC input, DC ◯◯ V to ◯◯ V

What is important here is the input voltage between the input terminals of the power supply.

There may be a voltage drop between the AC outlet and the power supply.
In case of trouble, first measure the input voltage between the input terminals of the power supply.

Another thing to watch out for
The AC input range may not be continuous input as “AC85 ~ 132V / AC170 ~ 264V”.
The voltage in the middle is not in the input voltage range.

Number of outputs

The number of outputs ranges from single output to 2 outputs, 3 outputs, 4 outputs … 12 outputs.
Two or more outputs are called multi-outputs.

The advantage of multi-output power supply is that only one power supply is required.
Also, since the input surge current is for one unit, the input parts can be small.

The larger the number of outputs, the harder it is to find a power supply with the appropriate voltage and current.
The demand for multi-output is declining, and the number of multi-output models from power supply manufacturers is also decrea

Rated output voltage (V)

The DC voltage between the output terminals of the power supply.

It is important that it is “between the output terminals of the power supply”.

There may be a voltage drop between the output terminals of the power supply and the load device.
In case of trouble, first measure the output voltage between the output terminals of the power supply.

The standard power supply voltage is generally 3.3V, 5V, 12V, 15V, 24V, 48V.
Other voltages are also registered as semi-standard models.

The output voltage can be changed by about ± 10% with a variable output voltage volume or an external voltage signal.

Maximum output current (A)

The maximum output current, also called the rated maximum current, is the maximum current value that can be passed through the load.

If the maximum output current of the power supply is 10A, 10A can be continuously applied to the load.

However, there are environmental conditions (ambient temperature), and it depends on the model that the ambient temperature can flow up to 10A.
Then, what to look for in the specifications is “operating temperature”, “operating temperature / humidity”, etc.

It’s easy if you use the search function

This site has three search functions, specification search and model search, manufacturer search.

The specification search searches for a matching power supply from among 30,000 models simply by checking and inputting four specifications.

Model search searches for a power supply with specifications close to that power supply just by entering the model name.
